Recycle and Repair

A big ‘thank you’ to Back2Bikes!

Earlier in the year, the team (Ian and Ian = ‘the two Ians’) from local social enterprise ‘Back2Bikes’ donated their time, money and energy to repairing and rejuvenating our bike fleet.

MJ has initiated the community connection and worked hard to coordinate these repairs for LFK – thank you MJ!

Back2Bikes volunteers have done an amazing job and our bikes look brand new again and are set to last for many years to come.

The team sourced parts from overseas and devoted many hours of work to our kindergarten bike fleet – thank you from us all 🙂

We’d love to see familes support this local enterprise whose mission is to provide bike training services, and bike recycling for the local community.

Please check out their site at www.back2bikes.org.au for more details or to donate a used bike.

Wild Action visits LFK

The children get up close with the Wild Action wildlife!

Each year one of our favourite visitors to kindergarten is the Wild Action team and the amazing creatures they bring for our children to experience up close.

This year was no exception as children met Australian reptiles, mammals and birds and were completely mesmerised.

The photos tell it all…and watch the video of our friend who didn’t want to leave LFK last year…

For the love of BOOKS

To launch Book Week at kindergarten we welcomed celebrated children’s book author and ex-LFK parent, Samantha Smith, for a fun session reading her book Harriet’s Hungry Worms, and engaging everyone with all things wormy!

This funny, engaging eco story invites the children to follow the adventures of Harriet’s ravenous compost worms as they munch their way through their wide and wonderful weekly menu. Packed with worm facts, Harriet’s Hungry Worms is the ideal companion for worm warriors and curious composters keen to roll their sleeves up and put their kitchen food scraps to good use.

Melissa Johns, has used recycled materials throughout the book to create the delightful collage-style illustrations.

We continued the ‘worm’ theme during Book Week with some fun arty activities.

This is one of our favourite weeks at LFK – thanks Samantha for such a fun session!

Centenary Week and the 100-year Party Celebrations

“Oh what a week…and what a night!”

In the third week of June the kindergarten community and children came together to celebrate 100 years of LFK with a week jam-packed with activities.

From dress up day to art workshops, from treasure hunts to displays of 100 years of kindergarten memories and milestones, everyone joined in to mark this milestone.

With wonderful activities we’ve been able to truly celebrate this milestone for our special community kindergarten culminating in our fabulous party on the Friday.

Our Events Team of Amber, Philippa, Penny, Lee-Ann (and our raffle wizard Uno) along with staff and parent helpers created an amazing week and party night to remember for children and families alike!

Thank you to our generous local business community for supporting our raffle.

Well done and thank you one and all for all the very hard work that has gone into these memorable celebrations.

Park Ranger Will is visiting LFK

On Tuesday 30th April, Ranger Will, a local Park Ranger from Parks Victoria, will visit LFK to lead an educational talk on the North Port Phillip area including:

  • “My patch” which spans the coastline from Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary all the way to Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary.
  • What a marine sanctuary is and why it is important
  • What kinds of creatures you will find in these areas (fish, invertebrate, plants, algae, and birds)
  • A small show and tell of some invertebrate, bird, and fish bones
  • Some of the threats to the area
  • Finishing with any questions the children might have.

We’re all excited to meet Ranger Will!

You can meet many of the park rangers working across Victoria and learn more about what they do, here.

Beach Clean Up Day

The sun popped out for more than 40 volunteers who scoured our foreshore for litter at our Beach Clean Up morning on 20 April.

More than 7kg of litter was meticulously gathered by children and adults alike.

A big thank you to our community for caring for country, clearing our nature spaces of litter and caring for our local wildlife habitats.

Let the Beach Walks begin!

Term One has seen our Coastal Curriculum commence with the start of our weekly beach/bush walks with children.

The children have been excited to explore the foreshore and as autumn sets in, mushroom-spotting has become a highlight as the children notice the rhythm of the changes in season.

In the six seasons of the Boonwurrung, Autumn is known as Manameet which means ‘good’

Happy Birthday Banner

The children have been busy letting their creativity run free creating a truly special birthday banner to celebrate 100 years of Lady Forster Kindergarten.

Thank you to all our children for creating our wonderful centenary birthday banner!

Centenary Year

Happy 100th Birthday – Lady Forster Kindergarten!!

Our Centenary year has arrived and a milestone for the kindergarten as we commence a year of celebration of 100 years of Lady Forster Kindergarten: 1924-2024.

Join us as we celebrate the significant impact our little kindergarten has had for so many people over the last century.

From our humble beginnings in 1924 in the Salvation Army Hall in Port Melbourne to where we are today on the beautiful Elwood foreshore.

We will have a number of events this year to mark this special 100 year milestone.

If you have a story or pictures to share about your time at Lady Forster Kindergarten – or know someone who does – please get in touch.

2023 Events

Our Events Team of volunteer parents has been busy lining up a year full of connection, fun and giving once again this year.

From our Family Welcome Picnic in March through to our Holiday Party to close out the year, we look forward to all the activities lined up!

A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteer parents for their tireless efforts for our kindergarten community.
